Charlotte Brontë was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Brontë sisters. She is best-known for her 1874 novel, Jane Eyre.
The novel revolutionised prose fiction by being the first to focus on its protagonist's moral and spiritual development through an intimate first-person narrative. Charlotte Brontë has been called the "first historian of the private consciousness", and the literary ancestor of writers like Marcel Proust and James Joyce. It, along with Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, is one of the most famous romance novels.
"Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by education; they grow there, firm as weeds among stones."
